In my personal reading of Galatians 4:8-20 this past week, it dawned on me that, “What makes me a Christian is not so much me knowing God, but God knowing me.”

In doing a little word study, I discovered that “To Know” in the Bible means more than just an intellectual awareness. To know someone is to enter into a personal relationship with that person. So when Paul says in Galatians 4:9, “now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God”, he is essentially saying that it’s not so much about the Christian’s affection and love for God, but rather God’s love and affection for the Christian that actually makes them and keeps them a Christian.

In 1 Corinthians 8:3, Paul does it again when he says that anyone who loves God does so because God KNOWS them. That means that God of the Universe has securely FIXED His love on us in Christ Jesus – which means that He not only loves us, but His love will never fleet or fade and is so abundant that it will give us the ability to love God back and have enough left over for our neighbor. This is an awesome reality and comes with it the promise that even though our knowing God will rise and fall depending on circumstances and situations, God’s knowing us is absolutely fixed, solid and absolutely unshakable forever and ever – Let that sink in.

Galatians is all about how God, in Christ, can love us unconditionally and that we are justified and are therefore, regarded by God as wholly perfect and righteous – not because of what we have done, but because of what Jesus has done for us. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 4 that: “Since God knows me, and sees Jesus when He looks at me, I don’t care what you think about me, and I don’t even care what I think about me!” Confident assurance like this can only be possible in our lives when we believe God and trust daily in the fullness of the gospel.

The great and central basis of Christian assurance is not how much our hearts are set on God, but how unshakably His heart is set on us! Now this is GOOD NEWS and it is the result of God’s AMAZING GRACE!
